Short-Term Scientific Mission
(STSM) Grant

Application Period: 01/12/2025-01/09/2025

STSM grant funds a visit to a host organization located in a different country than the country of affiliation by a researcher or innovator for specific work to be carried out and for a determined period of time.

Eligible applicants are all 42 COST Member Countries

The applicant must be a member of the HELIOS COST Action.

STSM need to be carried out in their entirety within a single Grant Period and always within the Action’s lifetime.

The visit must align with the network’s goals, such as knowledge exchange, skill-building, or collaborative research.

The visit must have a minimum duration of 5 calendar days that includes travel.

Providing a contribution for travelling accommodation and subsistence expenses, implementation of the project, delivery of the report to the COST Action MC and overall effort.

Up to EUR 4 000 per grant

The amount granted is decided by the Action Core Group on the proposal of the evaluators and should reflect the duration of the project and the location of the host institute.
STSMs grantees may request up to 50% pre-payment of the approved grant. This amount is subject to the availability of funds and approval by the Grant Holder Institution. The request for pre-payment shall be submitted to the Grant Holder Manager
Application shall be submitted online in e-COST using dedicated forms available in grant application e-COST page.
  • In the grant application e-COST page, select “Apply for a grant” and at the “Short-Term Scientific Mission Grant” tab press continue to start a new application.
  • Fill in the following information in e-COST:
    • Title of work to be carried at the host institution
    • Start and end date (within the active Grant Period)
    • Budget requested
    • Information about the host institution and contact person. The location of the host institution must be in a different country than the country of affiliation of the applicant
Upload the following documents in e-COST:
    • STSM application form (template available for download on e-COST)
    • Confirmation of the host on the agreement from the host institution in receiving the applicant
The application will be evaluated by the HELIOS grant awarding coordinator and reviewed by the HELIOS CORE Group. Priority will be given to applicants with most relevant topics within the scope of HELIOS and the field of hemoglobinopathies
After the STSM visit grantees must submit the following documents within 30 days in e-COST for claiming the STSM Grant:

Report to the Action MC on the work developed, main achievements of the STSM and planned future follow-up activities.

Grants are paid by the Grant Holder Institution after the completion of the activity and approval of all required report/documentation.
The number of Short-Term Scientific Mission grants that will be funded will depend on funding availability.
